How to Enjoy Graded Reading
These readings have been graded using high-frequency vocabulary from the NGSL (New General Service List), making it easier for English learners to enjoy stories and interesting subjects.
The most important objective is not to study the English—it is to enjoy the content.
You do not need to understand or memorize every word. It is enough to follow the overall meaning, even if there are some parts you do not completely understand.
Choose the Reading Style That Suits You
There is no single required way to use these readings. Choose how you read according to your interests, mood and purpose.
If You Simply Want to Enjoy Reading
Read the English text at your own pace.
When you encounter an unfamiliar word, try to infer its meaning from the context without stopping. If the word is not important for understanding the text, you can continue reading without looking it up.
You do not have to answer questions after finishing. If you enjoyed the reading, simply choose another one.
If You Want to Enjoy the Audio
You can listen while following the written text, or listen to the story without looking at it.
If the normal-speed recording is difficult, use the 90%-speed version. Once it becomes comfortable, try the normal-speed recording again.
You do not need to hear every word. Enjoy following the story and noticing the expressions you can understand.
If You Want to Study More Deeply
Optional activities may be available for vocabulary, comprehension, reading aloud and shadowing.
All these activities are optional. You do not need to complete every activity. Choose only the ones that feel useful or enjoyable.
A Simple Way to Begin
If you are unsure how to use a reading, try this approach:
- Read the title and short introduction and imagine what the text might be about.
- Read the entire text without using a dictionary.
- Think of one thing you found interesting or surprising.
- If you are interested, listen to the audio or try an optional activity.
- Choose the next story you would like to read.
Using a Dictionary
You do not need to look up every unfamiliar word.
Consider using a dictionary when:
- The word appears repeatedly.
- Not knowing the word prevents you from understanding the text.
- You are particularly interested in the word.
- You would like to use the word yourself.
If using a dictionary repeatedly interrupts your reading, try continuing without it.
Choosing a Reading Level
If a reading feels difficult, choose an easier level. This is not a step backward. Reading a large amount of comfortable English is an effective way to improve your reading speed and confidence.
If a reading feels too easy, try the next level.
Levels are not intended to judge your ability. They are guides to help you find something you can enjoy reading now.

You do not need to take a test every time you read something in English.
If you finish a reading, enjoy its content and feel that you would like to read another one, you have already had a valuable learning experience.
