Dogs Today

Today, dogs live in homes all around the world. They are our friends. We take care of them, and they love us. Many people think of their dog as part of their family.

But dogs were not always like this. A long time ago, dogs were wild animals. They did not live with people. So how did wild animals become our best friends?

Where Dogs Come From

Dogs come from wolves. Wolves are wild animals that live in groups. They hunt other animals for food. They are strong and smart.

Thousands of years ago, some wolves started to come near human homes. Why? Because people left food on the ground near their homes. The wolves could easily eat this food. They did not need to hunt.

The wolves that were less afraid of people could get more food. Over time, these wolves stayed near people more and more. This happened very slowly—over hundreds and hundreds of years.

People saw that these wolves could be helpful. The wolves made noise when other wild animals came near. This helped keep people safe at night. The wolves also helped people hunt. They could run fast and smell very well.

Slowly, people started to take care of these wolves. They gave them food. The wolves stayed with the people. After many, many years, these wolves changed. They became smaller. They became less afraid. They learned to understand people better. They became dogs.

This happened about 15,000 to 40,000 years ago. Dogs were the first animals to live with humans as pets.

Different Kinds of Dogs

Over time, people wanted dogs to do different jobs. So people started to choose which dogs would have baby dogs together.

Some people needed dogs to watch their sheep and cows. They chose big, strong dogs. These dogs could keep wild animals away from the farm animals.

Some people needed dogs to hunt. They chose dogs that could run very fast or dogs that could smell very well.

Some people wanted small dogs that could live inside their homes and be friends. They chose small, friendly dogs.

This is why there are so many different kinds of dogs today. Some dogs are very big. Some are very small. Some have long hair. Some have short hair. But they all came from the same animal—the wolf.

What Dogs Do for People

Dogs help people in many ways.

Some dogs work on farms. They watch sheep and cows. They keep the animals together and safe.

Some dogs help police find things. These dogs can smell things that people cannot smell. They can find people who are lost. They can find hidden things.

Some dogs help people who cannot see or hear well. These dogs learn to help their owners walk safely and live more easily.

Some dogs work to help people feel better. When people are sad or sick, a dog can help them feel less alone.

But most dogs today are just pets. They live with families. They play with children. They make people happy.

Why Do People Love Dogs?

People love dogs for many reasons.

Dogs are happy to see us. When you come home, your dog is excited. Your dog wants to be near you.
